[2]  Dr. James Cooke was a druggist, owning the largest establishment perhaps south of the Potomac River; he was an Old Line Whig and a prominent member of the Episcopal church.

[3]Three feet from the church, north side, with a rose bush which is covered with blossoms in the spring, is the grave of Dr. Cooke’s wife with the following inscription on her stone.

Dr. Cooke established a drug store here about 1824  Supplied confederates 1861-1863 $10,000  – morphine, chloroform

[4] Icehouse details. Ice was from Alum Spring Dam. Purchase of 1 share of $5 will allow 8 pounds of ice per day

[5] Breiderback’s Lettuce Soap- recommended for delicate skin and does not make face shine like old fashioned soap

[6] Advertised saltpeter
